Be salt and be light that is what Jesus says in Matt 5. Jesus uses two metaphors to describe what his followers should be like.
Salt was used when Jesus was on the earth. It was used to season food and to keep it from spoiling. The Romans soldiers were sometimes given salt as the pay. If they were not working hard enough they were told they were not worth there weight in salt.
As Christians, we are called to be salt and light. We are called to make a difference. We are called to give the earth some flavor and keep it from spoiling. We are called to have a positive impact in our neighborhood and at work. We want to be the person others are attracted to because of how we live our life and our positive attitude.
Salt is a unique substance on earth. You can try to get rid of it by putting it in water but drink it and it is still there. You can try to burn it but it still maintains its chemical composition. Jesus tells us that we are salt. Jesus is saying that we need to have a preserving influence in the world. We need to be more like salt and be able to withstand the sinful influences that try to spoil us.
Jesus says that we are also called to be light in the world. That is a great compliment because Jesus said He is the light of the world. It is not a challenge or a suggestion He says we are! One tiny light in a dark room can make a big difference.
Spend time to reflect on the salt and light qualities that you have. Make a plan today to be a preserving influence on the people around you.
The question is who are you being a light to? Maybe a better question is are you being a light to others?
